Our final topic for Y6 will be ‘Superheroes’ – we’ll be creating our own superheroes and superhero stories in English. We’ll then be making our own background sets before trying our hand at animating our stories. In Science and DT, we’ll be finding out which forces our superheroes have been able to overcome and then we will be learning about real-life superheroes from different walks of life.
To start the new half term, we will be studying early Islamic civilization in Baghdad c.AD900. Using our atlas skills, we will locate Baghdad and The Silk Road and explain why it was so important at the time. We will then investigate the buildings, features, layout and organisation of ancient Baghdad before working together to design, plan and build our own city. During DT sessions, we will research, develop, design and build a functional bridge, together with appropriate technical drawings. Furthermore, we will explore symmetry, shape and pattern to create our own Islamic Art.
This half-term, we plan to explore all things sea-related including habitats, adaptations of sea creatures and marine environmental issues. We will locate the world’s seas and oceans before moving onto investigating ocean habitats and the creatures that live there. We will be identifying how animals are suited to their environment and we will describe how living things are classified. Finally, we will be creating a documentary to raise awareness of various marine environmental issues.
We're going to be delving into the farthest reaches of space for our new topic. We'll be learning about our solar system and galaxy and we will be finding out what life was like in space for British astronaut, Tim Peake. We'll be drawing inspiration from images such as this one from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope as we create our own versions of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' art work and we'll be investigating the phases of the moon and learning why it appears to change shape.
Get a head-start! If you want to begin star- (or moon-) gazing yourself, check out the best days for doing so on this website here.
Throughout the second part of our autumn term, our topic will be ‘The World at War’, where we will be studying the First World War. History and Geography will be the main areas of learning; we will learn about the causes and alliances of The Great War, the interaction of those countries involved and will produce a timeline of events. We will then be using our knowledge and understanding to write the front page of a newspaper to report on the day war broke out.
We're going to be learning all about Tanzania: where it is; what it is like; who lives there and how the local people live. We'll be studying the geography of the country and hope to produce some beautiful art work. In computing sessions we'll be conducting research, creating ebooks and communicating with Mrs Allen while she's actually in Tanzania - isn't technology amazing?
We've been thinking about how special and unique we each are and how we work best as a class when we value ourselves and each other. We've worked on some collaborative art projects, played tournaments in teams and have considered how we can be a good friend. Our conclusion? We're better together!
