Spring 1 - Space - The Final Frontier

Space: The Final Frontier

To start the new year, our topic will be all to do with Space. We plan to explore all things space-related including the Earth, sun, moon, stars and planets. As well as learning about the solar system, we will be finding out how light travels, understand the causes of day and night and the changing seasons, learn about the sun’s positional changes, and find out how we see things. Furthermore, we will plan and carry out a space-based science investigation.

To start our topic, we learnt all about the planets - their names, their order and their sizes. We then used fruits to explore the relative sizes and distances of the planets - we were amazed by the distances between the first four rocky planets and the next four gas giants. We were also shocked by the size of Jupiter compared to all of the other planets! Have a look at our exploration below...
Next, we learnt about how light works. We were surprised to find out that light only travels in straight lines and that it bounces off objects into our eyes. We used string to demonstrate this, with one of us playing the part of the light source, one of us being the object and the other being our eyes. Have a look for yourself...

Our topic became even more exciting when we got to visit We The Curious in Bristol. We attended a Lego Robotics workshop, went to the Planetarium and got plenty of free time to explore. We have a fantastic time! Have a look at some of our highlights here...

We've been learning about how light travels - join us in our learning labs to learn for yourselves!

In French this half term, we have been learning how to say the names of our favourite animals. We have played lotto and pairs, matching the names of the animals to their pictures. We loved this, as you can see below!
In English, we have been reading The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. We are planning to write some newspaper reports about an encounter with the 'Space-Being'. To get into character, we interviewed each other about our encounters and then practised writing some direct and indirect speech. Here is a sneak peek at our interviews!
In Science, we conducted an experiment into the forces of gravity and air resistance. We designed and created our own parachutes and then tested them, investigating whether a larger parachute would mean an object falls slower. Here we are in action...
To finish off our topic, we showed off a fantastic range of learning logs. Have a look below!
We finished off our topic by holding a Science Fair for Years 2, 3 and 4. We had a fantastic time creating our exhibits and enjoyed sharing them with the younger children!
