Throughout school, we use Pie Corbett’s Reading Spine, which is a core of books that create  a living library inside a child’s mind. It is a store of classics and essential reads that help children engage at a deeper level and enter the world of the story.

Even though most children can read independently, it is still really important for them to read regularly. They should be reading for around 20 minutes every day. It's good for children to experience reading in different ways:

- Enjoying a book on their own (every day)

- Reading to an adult (several times a week)

- Talking about what is being read (several times a week)

- Listening to an adult read to them (regularly)

The documents below give some suggestions for age appropriate books and questions that you can use to discuss the books being read.

It's important that children read a variety of books and texts: story books, information books, newspapers and magazines, recipe books, instructions and leaflets.
