We're using our Space topic to study several pieces of music over the half-term. To begin with, we're learning about Gustav Holst who grew up in Cheltenham. He wrote a series of pieces called 'The Planets Suite'. We've really enjoyed listening to 'Mars - The Bringer of War' and have started to think about how Holst created the mood of the piece, using different orchestration, dynamics, tempi and rhythms.
Today we worked in small groups to start to compose our own pieces inspired by Holst's famous work. Here is a short extract of 'Mars' from the BBC Ten Pieces programme - the website is well worth exploring to find out more about Holst and other interesting musicians and composers.
