We've been working with Mrs Allen this half-term to learn about graphic scores. First of all we investigated different graphic scores by well-known modern composers, discussing all we could find out from each one. Then, we listened to music which had been composed from these graphic scores. Some us enjoyed the creative freedom these scores allowed, while some of us just found them quite strange! 

 

Over the following weeks we used the Kandinsky art work as a graphic score, interpreting the shapes, colours and positions into unique compositions. We then created our own Kandinsky-inspired graphic scores and used tuned and untuned percussion instruments to perform our compositions in front of the class.

 

Our work on graphic scores culminated in composing music on the iPads using the 'Beatwave' app. This allowed us to interpret our own art in a different way - using a whole range of electronic sounds and layering our ideas using the app - all very exciting!
